Sleek Walnut & Beech Wood Cutting Board
Sleek Walnut & Beech Wood Cutting Board
This is a walnut, quartersawn beech (a type of cut of the wood) and canary wood (imported from Africa) cutting board.
It has no feet, but does have nice, firmly-planted handles and those are made of imported African padauk wood. I worked hard to get a 6'-long piece of walnut 2" thick milled right so that this chopping board would sit and flat on a countertop with no feet. The beech, padauk and canary wood offer a beautiful contrast to the beautiful black walnut from North Carolina.
It's pretty good size and heavy enough to pretty much stay put on the countertop; the dimensions are 12.5" x 15.5" x 1.5. It weighs a solid 7 pounds, 12 oz.
Note there are a couple imperfections on one side of this cutting board, so although the handles and lack of feet make it fully reversible, I believe the good side will last you decades with proper care so that there is no need to turn it over.
This wonderful woodwork comes fully treated for water resistance; however, maintaining the finish with mineral oil, bee's wax, or tung oil is recommended. I tend to oil my personal cutting board when it looks a little dried out or dull, or when the knife marks seem more noticeable. It is one of life's pleasures, I think, to put an oil onto a dull looking cutting board! Avoid oils that will go rancid, however, such as olive, corn, or sunflower oils (and some also add coconut oil and walnut oil to that list). Mineral oil is of course the most commonly used oil, but Howard's cutting board conditioner works well and is available for $12-$15 on Amazon. One can sand a cutting board a bit if knife marks become too pronounced, though that hasn't been an issue for me with my personal side grain cutting board. You can contact me for more information on that in a year or two if it looks like knife marks should be sanded down.
