8.5-lb., 16-inch Diameter Maple Butcher Block
8.5-lb., 16-inch Diameter Maple Butcher Block
This huge maple "end grain" butcher block is nearly 2" thick.
There are three feet (since three always balances right, whereas four can have a little rock back and forth) made of poplar and sealed with shellac.
The finish is the brand of oil called "Walrus Oil" (not an animal product!) and then I finished it with Howard's "Wax It All". Food-safe. It is not glossy at all.
There must be six or seven tablespoons of oil embedded in the end grain of this huge board, but if it starts to look a little old or "dry" then just add your chosen wax--or mineral oil or sunflower oil will work fine. Should knife marks ever build up, you are free to sand the top a bit and voila--new surface! This American hard maple block could easily last a lifetime since maple stands up so well to knives.
Recommended to cut raw meat on a different surface, but maple is known to have bacteria-resistant properties.
All around big, beautiful board that is also fairly affordable--this would easily be $150 or $200 on other websites or Etsy. If you are comparison shopping, be sure to do an apples-to-apples comparison (square inches of wood or diameter + thickness, weight, type of wood, real wood feet, and finish)!
